EKOS - Bennetto Natural Foods Co

EKOS

We are certified climate positive

Bennetto is proud to be certified Climate Positive Business Operations with Ekos. We have measured and offset 120% (at least) of our operational carbon footprint for the last 4 years with certified carbon credits. These certified carbon credits are sourced from projects that work to grow and protect permanent restorative forests in New Zealand and the Pacific Islands.

They help to deliver climate resilience, waterways protection, erosion control, biodiversity conservation and community economic development.  We support the Babatana Rainforest Conservation Project in the Solomon Islands and the Kern Creek Forest Conservation Project in Maruia, New Zealand.

The secret to the quality of our chocolate has a lot to do with our ingredients and we know that our customers choose Bennetto because we really do care about our ingredients.

FAIRTRADE Fairtrade isn’t a marketing slogan – it’s an intentional decision to ensure our growers are protected and have a future. Essentially this means that the farmers who grow the finest cacao and organic sugar are paid a Fairtrade price. We purchase direct from the certified Fairtrade supplier in Peru, and pay the additional Fairtrade Premium, which is passed on to our producers. Because it is such an important part of our values, we are committed to Fairtrade and actively engage in supporting Fairtrade Australia and New Zealand. Our Fairtrade certified ingredients include:

  • Premium direct Peruvian Criollio cocoa, sourced from our Fairtrade partners in Peru.
  • At times, we also use cocoa and cocoa butter sourced from Conacado Cooperative through Trade Aid NZ. We will state this on the packaging.
  • Organic Sugar sourced from Fairtrade partners in Paraguay through Trade Aid NZ.

ORGANIC All our drinking chocolate cocoa is organic certified through the trustworthy standards of USDA. Through European and Japanese agriculture programmes our farmers gain additional ongoing support and direct assistance, to improve their living standards and conserve the environment around them. Through the organic programmes, the farmers receive both practical and technical support in the most up-to-date organic practices available. This important support also includes:

  • Zero interest loans for our farmers to obtain the correct tools.
  • Free school uniforms for our farmers’ children.
  • Educational seminars to ensure ongoing personal development.

The quality of the education and support is vital for our farmers – they even provide annual prizes for the most extraordinary organic beans. Ongoing quality is paramount to successful, sustainable farming.
